Stop Asking Black Women To Clean Up Your Mess

Stop Asking Black Women To Clean Up Your Mess

Last night was the airing of the 75th Golden Globes Awards. Per usual, white folks showed up to take things they don't deserve, and people of color were just there so they don't get fined. Shout out to Sterling K. Brown, the first black actor EVER to win best actor in a Drama TV series, and Aziz Ansari being the first Asian-American to win for best actor in a Television series.

Last night's awards stirred up more attention than usual as many women of Hollywood decided to attend the event wearing all black to show solidarity with the #MeToo movement. Many women went even further, said "fuck all this shit" and decided to call out Hollywood's sexist bullshit on live television. Natalie Portman, made sure we knew the nominees for best director were all male. Debra Messing called out E! for not paying their female co-hosts the same as their male co-hosts while being interviewed by E! Many more truly delightful moments happened throughout out the night as well.

But the greatest highlight of last night's event was Oprah Winfrey's speech after being the first black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.

Because everything that comes out of Oprah's mouth is amazing and can move even the evilest of souls, people have restarted this petition for Oprah to run for president.

People have been asking Oprah to do this for literal decades. Oprah has expressed several times, she has zero interest in doing so, why would you? Y'all hate black women

And herein lies my problem.

Stop asking black women to clean up your mess. Y'all elected this King Cheeto as president, not black women. Black women showed up in historical numbers to vote against him and y'all still made sure he got elected. More recently, black women had to swoop in and save Alabama from electing Roy Moore because once again, y'all was on some dumb shit.

Day after day, America shows how much they hate black women, but now you want us to come save your ass when you have actively worked against us? This includes ALL races, not just white people. Let's not pretend like people of color don't actively hate black women too. Black women do not exist to be your superheroes. Do not use the "strong black women" trope to throw all your burdens and problems onto the backs of black women. We do not have superpowers to save everyone. We have to be "strong black women" to take care of ourselves, because y'all do so much to tear us down. We aren't strong to take care of you. Y'all got yourselves into this political shitshow, now you can fix it.

That doesn't even begin to touch the sheer amount of hell that a black woman in office would deal with. You would actually vote for a black women to be treated like that? Says a lot about how much you care about black women. Look at the shit Obama had to deal with and he had the privilege of being a man. Michelle dealt with even more, and she wasn't even president. Now put being black AND a woman together, you're asking for us to put our lives on the line. Why the fuck would you ask us to basically die for you? It's pure misogynoir.

Black women show up at polls to save ourselves, not you. You don't care about us, someone has to, and it is us. We were not going to sit by and let y'all elect a pedophile like Roy Moore into office. We tried to stop Trump, but we were outnumbered. We had to show up to protect ourselves and you voted against your own best interests and ours. So don't call us up now asking to come fix the mess you created.

As April said in her tweet, you want Oprah, as president? Prove it. You spend the next four years fighting for black women and then we can talk about it. Spend four years laying down your lives to protect us, to get us equal rights, treatment and pay like you're asking us to do for you. But we all know you won't. You'll be back to shaming us, sexualizing us, calling us monkeys and tar babies like you every day, until you need a superhero to swoop in to save you from yourself.

Nah. You're on your own. Black women are not your political mules.
